ID Buzz Named To TIME’S List Of Best Inventions Of 2024

While the design team at Volkswagen believed the ID Buzz, the manufacturer’s Microbus, to be revolutionary and life-changing, the company is thrilled to have TIME publicly recognize the groundbreaking nature of this creation by including it on the list of best inventions for 2024. This prestigious list includes 200 items that the staff feel have stretched the current standards and boundaries for inventions based on factors such as their impact on the world in terms of their energy efficiency, environmental benefits, and ambition involved in creating the device.

Meet The 2025 ID Buzz

At first glance, you are sure to recognize the nod to the past with the iconic appearance of the ID Buzz. But while the look is retro, the technology and function of the ID Buzz are anything but stuck in the past. What looks like the popular VW minibus is actually 30 inches shorter than today’s typical full-sized SUV while still providing the same ample interior space and function. Owners have the capability to accommodate up to seven passengers and a myriad of great and personal items in this trendy and very stable minivan.

Powering this versatile vehicle is a rear-mounted motor that produces 282 horsepower and 413 foot-pounds of torque. The powertrain is completed with a dual-stage one-speed gearbox and pulse inverter. For charging, Volkswagen created a new inverter and software in-house for this project. The boon for drivers is that a fast-charging station can restore energy in 10 to 80 percent charges with a power supply stop of less than 30 minutes.

The range for the various models of the ID Buzz is from 234 miles with the rear-wheel drive version to 231 miles for the four-wheel drive model. This 13-cell power system delivers an impressive 90 MPGe in the city and 75 MPGe on the highway efficiency. Buys will also appreciate the 500 kWh charging included in their purchase that can be used at the 900 Electrify America charging locations across the country.
