Twin Cities drivers demand a family vehicle that is big enough for our lives. We have unique needs that reflect the vastness our country, and all of the duties that we require for our vehicles.
We call this the Volkswagen Atlas.
Built on the same MQB platform that is the basis for the Alltrack and Golf, the Atlas has the on-road capabilities in ride, handling, and refinement that you’ve come to expect with Volkswagen. Because of this unique chassis, Volkswagen was able to maximize interior space, while keeping the exterior size reasonable. Look at any other true three-row crossover on the market today and you will see just how huge they have become, the Atlas maintains the athletic build and size that you have come to expect from Volkswagen.
On the inside, the new Atlas is a true three-row crossover. Full-size adults, not just pre-teen children can sit comfortably in the third row, Lawrence Ulrich from TheDrive.com had this to say, “The most cavernous, easy-access third row I’ve experienced in this segment. We stuck Atlas product manager Jim Burch— all six feet seven inches of him— in the third row, and while his knees were a bit stressed, he had headroom to spare. Trust me: Most six-foot-four men could spend hours in the third row with little complaint.”
The style is clean and functional with an emphasis on premium feel. A new eight-inch infotainment display gives you the latest in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto through App-Connect. Also available as an option is the new 12.3-inch customizable digital cockpit that shows you multiple displays from the basic dials to a full screen of the navigation system. As good as it looks in photos, in real life, it’s at another level!
The second row has available Captain’s chairs, along with 7.7 inches of fore and aft movement, it can even tilt and fold while a child seat is secured.
Powering the Atlas is a choice of two engines. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine offers 235 horsepower, good for returning up to 26 MPG on the highway. For more power and capability, the pick of power is the 3.6-liter VR6 engine, developing 276 horsepower and 266 ft/lb of torque. This engine is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
While the four-cylinder turbo engine comes in front wheel drive, you can have the V6 engine in either front drive or the Volkswagen 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The 4Motion AWD version also features a Drive Mode Selection. In “Onroad” mode you can select Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual. There is also “Snow”, “Offroad” and Custom Offroad” settings. The Atlas isn’t built to run in any off-road course, but it is fully capable of taking you and your family up to the cabin, or to your favorite camping spot.
Pricing for the Volkswagen Atlas begins at $30,895 for the 2.0L front-drive S model and runs up to $48,395 for the SEL Premium V6 with 4Motion.
