2021 Tiguan IIHS Top Safety Pick

Safest Vehicle of 2021

2021 Tiguan Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has soared in popularity over the years, and for good reason. This stylish SUV is roomy enough to fit the whole family or a group of friends, while still having the versatility of a compact SUV. The best part about the Tiguan, however, is its focus on safety. So focused, in fact, that it was listed as 2020 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with dynamic cornering headlights and Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS).

The Reasons Behind the Award

In order to receive the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must earn "good" ratings in every one of the IIHS's six crashworthiness tests. The vehicle's front crash prevention must have a rating of "advanced" or "superior" when evaluated as vehicle-to-pedestrian and vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention. The headlights also need a certain rating of "good" or "acceptable". The Tiguan received a rating of "good" in all six categories, except for the Front Assist system that received a rating of "superior". As an example of the Volkswagen goal to provide safe vehicles, the Front Assist system now comes standard on every Tiguan model.

Included in Front Assist is Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Pedestrian Monitoring. Forward Collision Warning works by monitoring traffic to warn the driver of a potential rear-end collision with the vehicle ahead. The alerts are delivered both visually and acoustically. Autonomous Emergency Braking will then provide assisted braking or automatic braking if a potential collision is detected. Pedestrian Monitoring works similarly by warning the driver of a potential crash with a pedestrian crossing in front, and then it will brake automatically if needed.

More About the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Nowadays there are countless vehicles and vehicle models out on the market. It can be confusing and time-consuming to attempt to compare them all. Back in 2013, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety wanted to help drivers compare the safety of vehicles, so they created their front crash prevention rating program. The IIHS is dedicated to providing scientific and unbiased information that you can trust, which is why they remain a nonprofit, independent organization. Their highly trained professionals evaluate the prominent factors contributing to vehicle crashes and research how to prevent these accidents. Vehicle testing is done at the Vehicle Research Center and then the best performers, like the 2021 Tiguan, receive certain awards like the Top Safety Pick.
