Motor Trend: VW Jetta

Sporty and Sensible
Motor Trend writers test-drive and review three competent choices for an affordable, yet performance-driven sports sedan in their latest issue. After reviewing each, Motor Trend weighs in on the Honda Civic Si, the Suzuki Kizashi GTS and the Volkswagen Jetta GLI.

In the article, writer Ron Kiino discusses sport sedan selections in a tight economy. He notes the BMW 3 Series being the best value for its price, but many consumers aren't interested in dropping $36,000 on a new sports car. Offering a solution to this dilemma, Kiino offers and reviews three "Two-Buck Chuck" cars-referencing the ever-popular Charles Shaw selection of wine retailed at Trader Joe's across the country for as little as $2 a bottle.

Kiino and Co. select the Suzuki Kizashi Sport GTS as the third place sub-$25k sports sedan, followed by the Honda Civic Si, which receives runner-up honors.

It's the Volkswagen Jetta GLI that receives highest praise from Motor Trend, noting that it's a "well-mannered grown-up not afraid to cut loose and have a good time." According to the report, the GLI offers 0-60mph acceleration in just 6.5 seconds by way of its turbocharged engine, which offers an impressive 22 city/33 highway mpg according to the EPA.

Kiino also praises the GLI's sharp exterior, interior space and storage, and quiet ride. He concludes his GLI assessment by sharing that the GLI boasts the "sexiest styling (this is how handsome a Jetta can look), the most rewarding, most refined driving experience, and the best packaging. For an affordable, fun, front-drive sport sedan with a manual, VW has bottled perfection."
